Easy Pinecone Ornaments to Make with Kids

Looking for a simple but fun (and not so messy) ornament to make with kids? This pinecone ornament doesn’t require many materials and it’s easy enough for even the littlest hands to make. The hardest part will be deciding where to hang it.

Materials:

  • pine cones (Follow this link to see how we clean ours.)

  • glitter glue (We liked silver the best against the brown of the pinecone.)

  • popsicle stick or paintbrush

  • small dish for dispensing the glitter glue

  • baker’s twine

  • scissors (for the twine)

How to make your glitter pinecone ornaments:

  1. After you gather your materials, decide how you will apply the glitter glue.

(You can purchase pinecones if you don’t want to gather and clean your own.)

    • Squeezing it through the fine tip of the bottle allows for the most control. However, it takes a lot of grip strength. When I used the large bottle of glitter glue, my hand fatigued even before I finished tracing the edges of the cone. The smaller bottles were not as difficult to use for some reason.

    • Another great option is dispensing some glitter glue into a little dish. Then use a paintbrush to “paint” it onto the pinecone. This is probably the easiest option for little kids, but it doesn’t allow for much control of where the glitter lands.

    • Our favorite option was dipping a small popsicle stick into the dispensed glitter glue and dabbing it onto the tips of the pinecone. (The hanging pinecone pictured here was decorated using this method.)

  2. Hold the pinecone either by the very bottom or the very top and carefully apply the glitter glue using your preferred method.

  3. Allow to dry for 24 hours.

  4. Attach an 8 inch piece of decorative baker’s twine to the tip of the pinecone. Start by tying one end of the string into a knot around the very top tip. leaving extra string dangling. Tie the other end of the string to the remaining dangling portion by the knotted end. Now you should have a loop of string to use to hang your ornament on the tree or mantle.

This would be a fun craft to do at a crafting playdate or for a winter party in the classroom.
